The Polk County Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden is both a working garden and a peaceful retreat for visitors, where the public can discover new and interesting plant materials and techniques through classes and attractive displays of annuals, perennials, vegetables, berries and orchard fruits . The Demonstration Garden is a labor of love by over 80 master gardener volunteers who design, plant, weed, water and harvest from April to the fall freeze.
During harvest, food is delivered weekly to local food pantries. In 2017, volunteers delivered over 1300 pounds of vegetables and 600 pounds of apples and pears to area pantries. Although the Urbandale Food Pantry has been the primary partner, in 2016 the Clive Food Pantry was added to our distribution list, which also includes the Johnston Food Pantry and the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Pantry.
